Right now, a child in Canada is being bullied online. Another is at risk of online sexual exploitation. Others are lying awake at 2am, scrolling through content designed by algorithms to keep them hooked.

Social media platforms were built to maximize engagement, not to protect children. We are seeing rising rates of anxiety, depression, cyberbullying, and sexual exploitation. This is the new normal for a generation of Canadian kids.

And the Canadian government still has not acted.

We protect children in the physical world with seatbelts and age minimums for gambling and tobacco. It’s time to protect them online too.
